EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION

SECTION 8

EXPOSURE

LIMITS

No exposure standards are available for this product, however, the following exposure standards

have been assigned by the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission (NOHSC) to the

following component of the product: TETRACYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE (Worksafe Australia)

[TWA]-10 mg/m³ [STEL]-3 mg/m³

PERSONAL

PROTECTION

GLOVES: PVC or natural rubber.

EYES: Chemical goggles or facesheild to protect eyes.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Avoid breathing of dusts. The use of a respirator is not normally required,

however, if high dust levels are present, then the use of a suitable dust mask or half-face respirator

with a P1 filter is recommended. All respirators must comply with AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716.

ENGINEERING

CONTROLS

Good

industrial

exposure

maintained

below

recommended exposure standards. This is preferably achieved through the provision of adequate

ventilation where necessary. Where dust cannot be controlled in this way, personal respiratory

protection should be employed.

STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

SECTION 10

* Product is considered stable. * Hazardous polymerisation will not occur.

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

SECTION 11

POTENTINAL HEALTH EFFECTS

ACUTE *Swallowed

May cause irritation to the eyes, with effects including: tearing, pain, stinging and blurred vision.

*Eye

If dust enters the eyes, immediately hold the eyes open and wash with fresh running water.

Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving

the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids.

If pain persists or recurs seek medical attention.

*Skin

The material may be slightly discomforting to the skin from repeated exposures over long

periods. Topically applied tetracycline may produce yellow discoloration of the skin which

fluoresces under black or fluorescent light. Exposure to the material may result in a form of

sunlight-initiated dermatitis (photo toxicity).

*Inhaled

The dust is slightly discomforting to the upper respiratory tract.

Persons with impaired respiratory function, airway diseases and conditions such as emphysema

or chronic bronchitis, may incur further disability if excessive concentrations of particulate are

inhaled.

CHRONIC

Principal routes of exposure are by accidental skin and eye contact and inhalation of generated

dusts. Repeated or prolonged exposure to tetracycline may produce sore throat, hoarseness, a

black hairy tongue, bulky loose stools, steatorrhoea, stomatitis, dysphasia, inflammatory lesions

anogenital

area

conjunctivae.

Tetracycline

reportedly

produce

microscopic

discolorations of the thyroid glands but do not appear to interfere with thyroid function. They do
