3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Most important hazards: Toxic by inhalation and if swallowed.

Specific hazards: Toxic to aquatic organisms.

This product contains an anticholinesterase compound. Do not use if under medical advice not to work

with such compounds.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation: Move to fresh air. Oxygen or artificial respiration if needed. Call a physician or Poison

Control Centre immediately.

Skin contact: Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water while removing contaminated clothing

and shoes. If a person feels unwell or symptoms of skin irritation appear, consult a physician.

Eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Keep eye wide open while

rinsing. Consult a physician.

Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting without medical advice. Never give anything by mouth to an

unconscious person. Call a physician or Poison Control Centre immediately.

Notes to physician: Oxamyl; This product is a cholinesterase inhibitor carbamate. Poisoning produces

effects associated with anticholinesterase activity which may include : constriction of pupils, blurred

vision , weakness, headache, nausea, sweating, muscle twitching and difficulty in breathing

Treatment : Administer atropine sulphate as antidote.

Morphine, 2-PAM and oxime therapy are contra-indicated.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

Suitable extinguishing media: water spray, dry chemical, foam, carbon dioxide (CO2)

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons: high volume water jet (contamination

risk)

Specific hazards: In the event of fire and/or explosion do not breathe fumes.

Special protective equipment for firefighters: In the event of fire, wear self-contained breathing

apparatus.

Specific methods (on small fires) If area is heavily exposed to fire and if conditions permit, let fire

burn itself out since water may increase the area contaminated. Cool containers / tanks with spray

water.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal precautions: wear personal protective equipment Evacuate personnel to safe areas.

Environmental precautions: Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system.

Methods for cleaning up: Neutralize with sodium hydroxide and allow to stand for 4 hours. Soak up with

inert absorbent material. If liquid has been spilt in large quantities clean up promptly by scoop or

vacuum. Use approved industrial vacuum cleaner for removal. Shovel into suitable container for

disposal.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling

Technical measures/Precautions: Ensure adequate ventilation.

Safe handling advice: wear personal protective equipment Keep away from sources of ignition - No

smoking.

Storage

Technical measures/Storage conditions: Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and

well-ventilated place. Keep at temperatures above 0 °C. Store in a place accessible by authorized

persons only.

Incompatible products: Incompatible with strong acids and bases.

Packaging material: No materials to be specially mentioned.

Further information: Keep out of reach of children.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering measures: Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

Control parameters:

oxamyl DuPont’s acceptable exposure limit: AEL(8-h TWA) = 0,5 mg/m3; AEL(15-min

TWA) = 1,0 mg/m3; DuPont(1999)

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection: respirator with A2 filter or respirator with combination filter for

vapour/particulate.

Eye protection: face-shield. or tightly fitting safety goggles

Hand protection: rubber gloves.

Skin and body protection: protective suit.

Hygiene measures: Wash hands and face before breaks and immediately after handling the product. Keep

away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Avoid contact

with skin, eyes and clothing. Remove and wash contaminated clothing and gloves, including the inside,

before re-use.
