Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., on steps the Agency is taking to prevent potential medical device shortages and ensure safe and effective sterilization amid shutdown of a large contract sterilization facility

The FDA is aware that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a state EPA Order to stop a contract sterilizer, Sterigenics, from sterilizing medical products and other products with gas called ethylene oxide at their Willowbrook, Illinois facility. The EPA order was due to the presence of levels of ethylene oxide higher than the EPA found to be acceptable in air around the facility. The FDA has been closely monitoring the situation and working with device manufacturers affected by the c...

Phytophthora ramorum: monitor its spread and eradicate contaminated sites

First detected in France in the Finistère region in May 2017, the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum poses a significant risk for many ornamental and forest-growing plants (rhododendrons, vibernum and larch trees). ANSES issues recommendations to monitor the spread of this fungus-like microorganism, prevent the risk of its introduction and eradicate outbreaks where it is already found.

Giant hogweed: limit its proliferation in order to reduce risks to human health and the environment

Placed on the European Union's list of invasive species of concern, giant hogweed presents risks both to the flora of the environments it colonises and to human health. In response to this observation, ANSES was asked to summarise knowledge regarding this plant and make risk management recommendations. With its expert assessment work completed, the Agency recommends the creation of a monitoring system and the use of available control methods to eradicate giant hogweed populations in high-priority areas.

Launch of the national exploratory measurement campaign for pesticide residues in air

ANSES, INERIS and the network of approved air quality monitoring associations (AASQAs) coordinated by ATMO France are today launching a campaign to measure pesticide residues in air. This first national campaign aims to improve knowledge of the pesticides found in ambient air and thus gain a better understanding of the exposure of the French population. This campaign will ultimately be used to define a surveillance strategy for pesticides in air.
